What Is a Bye in Sports? Brackets, Round Robins and League Weeks
A bye is when a team doesn’t play in a round. In a bracket it advances automatically; in a league it simply has the week off.
Byes come up in three places: playoff brackets, round robin schedules and league weeks. Here is how each works and how to assign them fairly.
Byes in a bracket
Brackets pair teams two at a time, so they work cleanly with 4, 8 or 16 teams. With any other number, some teams skip the first round.
Number of byes = next power of 2 − number of teams
| Teams | Bracket size | Byes | Who gets them |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 8 | 3 | Seeds 1–3 |
| 6 | 8 | 2 | Seeds 1–2 |
| 7 | 8 | 1 | Seed 1 |
| 10 | 16 | 6 | Seeds 1–6 |
| 12 | 16 | 4 | Seeds 1–4 |
Byes go to the top seeds as a reward for their regular season. See the 6 team bracket for a worked example.
Byes in a round robin
With an odd number of teams, one team sits out every round. Over a full round robin, each team gets exactly one bye, so it evens out. The 5 team and 7 team schedules show where each bye falls.
Bye weeks in a league
In a league, a bye week is a week a team has no game, often because of an odd number of teams or limited facility time. Spread bye weeks across the season so no team gets two in a row, and avoid giving anyone a bye in the final week before playoffs.
Making byes fair
- In brackets, give byes by seed, never at random.
- In schedules, give every team the same number of byes.
- Don’t let byes decide standings. Rank by winning percentage or points per game if teams end up with different numbers of games. See how to calculate winning percentage.
- Use the idle team. Bye teams can referee, keep score or get a practice slot.
Frequently asked questions
What is a bye in sports?
A bye is a round in which a team doesn’t play. In a bracket the team advances to the next round automatically; in a round robin or league it sits out that round.
Why do top seeds get byes?
Brackets work in powers of 2 (4, 8, 16). When there are fewer teams, the top seeds skip the first round as a reward for their regular-season finish. With 6 teams, seeds 1 and 2 get byes.
Does a bye count as a win?
No. In a bracket the team advances without a result; in a league the bye isn’t a game, so it doesn’t count as a win, loss or tie in the standings.
How many byes are in a bracket?
The number of byes is the next power of 2 minus the number of teams. 6 teams need 2 byes, 12 teams need 4, and 8 or 16 teams need none.
