How Playoff Seeding Works: Standings, Brackets and Byes

Seeding ranks the playoff teams by their regular-season record, then pairs the best with the worst so the top seeds can only meet late in the bracket.

Here is how to turn standings into seeds, the standard pairings, how byes and reseeding work, and how to seed when there are no standings yet.

Step 1: rank the teams

Order the playoff teams by their regular-season standings: winning percentage or points, then your tiebreaker rules. The best record is seed 1.

Step 2: pair the best with the worst

TeamsFirst-round pairings
41 vs 4, 2 vs 3
81 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 3 vs 6, 2 vs 7
161 vs 16, 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, 4 vs 13, 6 vs 11, 3 vs 14, 7 vs 10, 2 vs 15

Pairings are arranged so seeds 1 and 2 are on opposite halves of the bracket and can only meet in the final. See the 8 team bracket for the full layout.

Step 3: give byes to the top seeds

If the number of playoff teams isn’t 4, 8 or 16, the top seeds skip the first round. With 6 teams, seeds 1 and 2 get byes; seed 1 then plays the winner of 4 vs 5. More in what is a bye.

Fixed bracket or reseeding

  • Fixed bracket: the path is set before the playoffs. Teams know who they could face, and scheduling is simpler.
  • Reseeding: after each round, the remaining teams are ranked again so the top seed always plays the lowest remaining seed.

Either works. Decide before the playoffs and publish it.

Division winners

With several divisions, choose one approach:

  • Division winners first: each division winner takes a top seed, then the remaining spots go by record.
  • Overall record: all playoff teams are seeded by record, regardless of division.

Seeding without standings

For a tournament or a league’s first season, seed by a random draw, by skill rating, or by last season’s finish. A short round robin before the bracket gives you standings to seed from.

Single or double elimination

Seeding works the same way for both. A single elimination bracket is shorter; a double elimination bracket gives every team a second chance.

Frequently asked questions

How does playoff seeding work?

Teams are ranked by regular-season standings, using tiebreakers where needed. The top seed plays the lowest seed, the second plays the second-lowest, and so on, so the top two can only meet in the final.

What are the standard bracket pairings for 8 teams?

1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 3 vs 6 and 2 vs 7. The winners of 1 vs 8 and 4 vs 5 meet in one semifinal, and the other two winners meet in the other.

What is reseeding?

Reseeding ranks the remaining teams again after each round, so the top remaining seed always plays the lowest. A fixed bracket keeps the original path instead.

How do you seed a tournament without standings?

Use a random draw, a rating such as a skill level, or last season’s finish. Some tournaments play a short round robin first and seed the bracket from it.
